18 May I’m Going With Placenta Encapsulation & My Family Is Freaking Out
As you probably already know, the practice of having a Postpartum Placenta Specialist come to your home and carefully process your placenta, transforming it into easy to swallow vitamin-like capsules is an increasingly common occurance. It’s called Placenta Encapsulation.
You probably wouldn’t be reading this right now, if you’d never heard of it right?
Truth be told in the Pacific Northwest, throughout the Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia areas, the number of families seeking this service has skyrocketed over the past 10 years.
But that doesn’t mean everyone is on board. What do you do when you want to proceed with placenta encapsulation, and your family is freaking out?
Like, they’re not just giving you the side eye, but they are truly grossed out. They don’t understand what you’re planning to do or why you’d want to.
In their objections, they might be calling it or you hurtful names and making claims against the practice based on assumptions or misinformation rather than listening to what you’re saying is important to you.
Know that I hear you, and I have a few suggestions for easing the angst and helping this process go more smoothly for all involved…
For the family member who is stuck at: “That is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever heard of. I don’t want to hear another word about it.”
- Ok, that’s cool. I don’t need to talk about it. What I’ll do is send you a text (or leave you a note) with the expected dates & times that the Specialist will be over so that you can decide whether you want to stick around or go get coffee for a couple of hours. Either way, it’s happening.
For the family member who is feeling like: “OMG, don’t tell anyone…what will people think??”
- Well I would hope that people will choose to offer me a high five for doing what I feel is best for me! But don’t worry, I won’t be telling any of the ladies from (name-the-club-that-applies).
For the family member who is worried: “But how do you know that it’s even safe to do that with your placenta?”
- I know, it sounds like a shady sort of thing doesn’t it? But when I was reading up on how the placenta works and all it is responsible for, I also learned about proper precautions to take after I deliver it. And the Postpartum Placenta Specialist I hired is trained with the safest processing standards there are, so I’m not only confident that it will be safe but I know that this is what’s right for me.
For the family member who is all about the details: “What’s going to happen EXACTLY, and how do we know what to expect?”
- Oh, you’ll love this! The Specialist I hired has gone over all of the specifics with me and followed up with sending me a detailed rundown of every step from now until my capsules are finished. Here, let me show you! And she said that you could call her with any questions you have…
So there you have it. Four common concerns voiced by the freaked out family members, and suggested ways to approach those concerns.
I hope it helps, and as always: feel free to give us a call for additional assistance with this conversation.
