20 Dec Reconnecting With The Fun Of Christmas

There’s this look about town. And the occasional scent of snow in the air.

The barista hands over my latte in a seasonally festive cup and I hear Jingle Bells in every store I enter.

The fun of this season is strangely tangible and sticky, like a gut feeling.

And I admit that over the last several years, the fun has been elusive for me.

Life in general has been busier than ever. Doulas Northwest has done nothing but grow, which is exactly how it should be. And teaching ProDoula’s Labor Doula, Postpartum Doula, and Placenta Prep trainings keeps me moving in all directions!

I know that for the average family, balancing busy work schedules with young children and new babies is hard. It’s one of the hardest things we do, yet we wouldn’t have it any other way, would we?

This year, I really wanted to be able to say that I enjoyed the holidays. I wanted to enter 2017 knowing that I had let myself soak it all in and slow down enough to notice the twinkle lights and appreciate the festive appearance of today’s latte.

So, I did some things ahead of time to help myself and create the space for me to take an extra breath this last week, leading into Christmas and the New Year.

  1. I strategically placed my last training of 2016 a full week before Christmas, knowing I would be able to return home and setting the intention to then shift my focus to having fun with my family. This has worked out perfectly and my children and I are enjoying a slower paced week, going and doing whatever Christmas-y things we please.
  2. As the owner of Doulas Northwest, I have built a solid and hard working team of Doulas around me. They are truly the heartbeat of my company and their dedication to every DNW client they work with is unsurpassed. I can very confidently send them to you, even during this busy season and know that they will support you as wholeheartedly as I do.
  3. I have learned to know my limits and not apologize for them. I know better than to plan too many trainings, too close together. Over the years, I have learned how much client work I personally, can say yes to and still maintain all of my other business responsibilities. And that it is more than ok to set different limits than what you might set for yourself. With this in place, I was able to make sure I would have extra time available this week…to enjoy the season with my family.

This may all sound very easy and mostly like common sense. But I think you and I both know how much easier said than done it is, to accomplish the goal of slowing down.

That said, I wish you and your family a holiday season filled with all of the details that are meaningful for you. Here’s to extra marshmallows for your hot cocoa, short lines while shopping for food and gifts, and that extra sprinkle of glitter atop your sugar cookie.
